My Journey

The Path Beyond The Poison

Gary — Sober Sound

Life is calm.

I don’t miss alcohol. At all.

Never have the slightest inclination to drink.

I am not bitter about my past alcoholism. It was an experience. One that has made me the bloke I am today.

My experience is also the reason @sobersound exists.

Age 15

I’m Gary & I am twelve years sober. I am a 45 year old father.

Started getting smashed in the park at 15. Intoxicating.

Thought it loosened me up and made me charismatic.

Started university. My drinking was already wild. Scrapes, fights, pub bans, mouthy shitbag. Life slowly unravelled.

Age 19

I couldn’t control my boozing by the age of 19.

I became a breakfast drinker.

The depression and anxiety properly gripped me.

The debt increased and became unmanageable.

I moved to London after uni. It swallowed me up.

I was totally unprepared to be an adult. To become a man.

The Twenties

My twenties were defined by dodging debt collectors and drunken debauchery.

I treated my body and mind like shit.

My career was fucked. My head was fucked. My liver was fucked.

So, I moved to Spain to sort my life out. And realised beers were €1.50.

You can imagine…

April 2014

In April 2014 I walked into AA in Seville.

I accepted I had a problem. I made a plan.

A meticulous plan that covered every aspect of my life. All geared up to stay sober.

I walked, read, and wrote and meditated. I didn’t socialise for 2 years.

The Dark

Sometimes I had to break it down into minutes.

"Just don’t drink for the next five minutes," I’d tell myself.

It was hard. Every day was hard. But I fucking stuck at it.

I excelled at work. I lost 30kg. I answered my Mum’s phone calls. Every time she rang. Because the shame was abating.

2020

And the shame stayed away.

The meticulous plan just became the new norm.

It worked. I had banished all the misery, and dependency.

I won. Alcohol lost.

In 2020, my ex called me. "Come home," she said. "Be with me."

I flew home during Covid. And we made a kid.

The Mission

I am not bitter about my past alcoholism. It was an experience.

One that has made me the bloke I am today.

My experience is also the reason @sobersound exists.

Now, I am here to share my experience.

To help you with your own alcohol-related demons.

To encourage and motivate you to drop the drink.

To teach you how to do it.

People are getting sober in droves because they know alcohol is poison.

Make sure you’re the next one to get healthy.
